Born on 30 November 1990, in Tønsberg Municipality, Norway, Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen also known as Magnus Carlsen is a thirty-year-old Chess prodigy. He earned his first grandmaster title at the age of thirteen and by the time he was 17 he had already won the Norwegian Chess Championship. 

He had exceeded a rating far ahead than 2800, by the age of 18 and at the age of 19, he bagged the number one position in the FIDE world rankings. His mother Sigrun Øen was a chemical engineer by profession and his father Henrik Albert Carlsen was an IT consultant. Before his family returned to Norway permanently, they spent some of their years in Espoo, Finland, followed by their stay in Brussels, Belgium. 

Carlsen was a special kid, a gifted one who accomplished solving a jigsaw puzzle at the age of 2 when most kids are learning to walk and talk. He learned to play chess from his father at 5 years of age, who himself was an amateur chess player. Carlsen had three sisters and the eldest one always challenged him to beat her at the game. The challenges came as a motivation to him and he drew encouragement from each of his victories.

Personal life

Talking about his political views, in 2016, Magnus Carlsen declared that he was a social democrat. Sharing about his food habits, he once said that he has three sisters and two of them are vegetarians which encouraged him to take up vegetarianism. 

Apart from Chess, he really enjoys watching and playing football. He is an avid supporter of Real Madrid CF. On 30 November 2013, he was honored with the kick-off ritual at the La Liga game between Real Madrid and Real Valladolid. Watching the Premier League is a hobby for him and he follows it like a true fan. He ranked first in the Fantasy Premier League game in December 2019. He even made it to the tenth position at the end of the season. 

Magnus Carlsen was trained by Grandmaster (GM) Simen Agdestein at the Norwegian College of Elite Sport. In 2000, Magnus Carlsen’s rating improved from 904 to 1907 and made him emerge as a potential superstar of the chess realm. In 2004, Magnus Carlsen surfaced as a victorious champion of the Corus chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee (group C). He lost a single game against Duško Pavasovič, and scored 10½/13. Duško Pavasovič was the highest scorer in the C group. The tournament led him to a PR of 2702 and also the title of a Grandmaster. 

In 2005, he was chosen to play in group B, and saw his success at the tournament, Lubomir Kavalek from the Washington Post, referred to him as “the Mozart of chess,”.

Talking about his game and strategy, his coach Agdestein asserted that Magnum Carlsen has a great memory and that he has played a wide range of openings. Impressed by his game, Microsoft came forward to sponsor him. Soon, Carlsen bagged another Grandmaster title at the Moscow Aeroflot Open. The same year, in March he won a match against the World Champion Anatoly Karpov in the blitz chess tournament that was held in Reykjavík, Iceland. Following the tournament, was the rapid knockout tournament that had Magnus Carlsen paired against Garry Kasparov. Carlsen made it through the first round but lost the second round.
