Born on September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York City, U.S, Bernie Sanders are the son of Elias Ben Yehuda Sanders (his father) and Dorothy Sanders (his mother). His father was from Austria but had moved to the United States of America and become a paint salesman. His mother, Dorothy, had Polish and Russian roots. 

Bernie was interested in Politics from a young age. Talking about what led him into politics, he asserted, “A guy named Adolf Hitler won an election in 1932.[c] He won an election, and 50 million people died as a result of that election in World War II, including six million Jews. So what I learned as a little kid is that politics is, in fact, very important.” It is said that many of Sander’s relatives were murdered in the holocaust.

He attended the elementary school at P.S. 197 and later the Hebrew school (afternoon). At School, he was involved in Basketball and even won a borough championship. He was also sent to James Madison High School. He became the captain of the track team at school and was involved in student politics. He lost his first election at school during his high-school years but he did not give up. Instead, he worked to gather funds for the Korean war orphans. 

Personal life:

Bernie Sanders married his college sweetheart, Deborah Shiling Messing in 1964. The couple had met at their college and worked together on the Israeli kibbutz Sha’ar HaAmakim as volunteers for a few months in 1963. They grew closer, started dating, and eventually got married. They did not have any children together and just two years after their marriage, they decided to split. In 1966, the couple got divorced officially. After his divorce, Sanders started dating Susan Campbell Mott, and in 1969, the two became parents to a baby boy named Levi Sanders. Levi Sanders is the only biological son of Bernie Sanders. The couple parted ways, a few years after Levi’s birth. 

In May 1988, Bernie Sanders married Jane O’Meara Driscoll AKA Mary Jane O’Meara. Sometime after their marriage, Jane was appointed as the president of Burlington College, in Burlington, Vermont. 

The couple bought a row house for themselves in the New North End neighborhood of Burlington. He did not have any children with Jane but accepted her three children Dave Driscoll, Carina Driscoll, and Heather Titus, from her previous relationship, as his own. Bernie Sanders has seven grandchildren. His son Levi had two children and adopted one and his stepchildren had four kids.

In Chicago, Sanders joined the Young People’s Socialist League and also became a part of the Civil rights movement. He was also a member of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Sanders appeared at the protests of The University of Chicago, where he said, “We feel it is an intolerable situation when Negro and white students of the university cannot live together in university-owned apartments.” 

In one of his Interviews, John Mahoney, who was a member of the University of Chicago, shared his views on Bernie Sanders and called him, “a swell guy, a nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn, but he wasn’t charismatic. One of his strengths, though, was his ability to work with a wide group of people, even those he didn’t agree with.”

From 1981 to 1989, he served as the Mayor of Burlington, Vermont. From 1991 to 2007, he worked for the U.S. House of Representatives and since 2007, he has been working as a U.S. Senate. In 2012, Sanders believed that he wasn’t satisfied and overwhelmed with the attempts of Obama to trade Social Security cuts for tax hikes. He thought standing against Obama was the only good option. As a result, in 2016, Sanders had supported Hilary Clinton against Donald Trump. In 2020, he expressed his wish to contest the presidential elections but was denied.
