Personal Life

Barack Hussein Obama II was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, in Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. His parents are Ann Dunham, an American of European descent, and Barack Obama Sr., an African. Barack’s parents met in 1960 in a Russian language class. They went to the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Barack’s father was a foreign exchange student. The couple divorced in March 1964.

Barack and his mother moved to Indonesia when he was just six years old to join his step-father, Lolo Soetoro whom his mother met in 1963. Barack attended local schools in Indonesia, two years in Sekolah Dasar Katolik Santo Fransiskus Asisi and one year in Calvert Homeschooling by his mother. Barack learned to speak fluently in Indonesian.

It was then in 1971 when Barack returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents. Barack attended a private college preparatory school at Punahou School.

Barack graduated from high school in 1979. He moved to Los Angeles and went to Occidental College on a full scholarship. He then traveled to Indonesia to spend time with his mother and half-sister, Maya Soetoro. In 1981, he changed schools and transferred to Columbia University in New York City as a junior. He majored in political science with a specialty in international relations and also in English literature. In 1983, Barack Obama graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a GPA of 3.7.

Career

For about a year after graduating, Barack Obama worked at the Business International Corporation as a financial researcher and writer. He also worked as a project coordinator for the New York Public Interest Research Group on the City College of New York campus for three months.

In 1996, he was elected to the Illinois Senate. He gained bipartisan support for legislation that aims to reform ethics and health care laws. He also supported the law which increased the tax credits for low-income workers, promoted increased subsidies for childcare, and negotiated welfare reform. In 1988, he was then reelected to the Illinois Senate. In 2002, he was re-elected again. In November 2004, Barack resigned from the Illinois Senate.

In the same year after his resignation from the Illinois Senate had an election in the U.S. Senate.  Yet, it was in 2003 when he announced his candidacy. On January 3, 2005, Barack was sworn in as a senator. He became the only Senate member of the Congressional Black Caucus. He then announced that he would resign from his senate seat to begin his transition for his candidacy for the presidential seat.

Barack Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States in Springfield Illinois on February 10, 2007. The announcement site was in front of the Old State Capitol building where Abraham Lincoln delivered his historic speech of ‘House Divided’ in 1858.

On August 23, 2008, he announced that Joe Biden is his vice-presidential running mate.
