Hillary Diane Rodham was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 26, 1947. She was born and reared in Park Ridge, Illinois, a beautiful suburb 15 miles northwest of Chicago. Hugh Rodham, a successful fabric business owner, and Dorothy Emma Howell Rodham had two younger brothers, Hugh Jr. and Anthony. Her parents emphasized hard work and academic excellence, and she grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, where her father’s textile business provided a comfortable income for the family. She was involved in youth activities at the First United Methodist Church and was a student leader in public schools. She eventually became a participant in liberal issues, but she was a member of her parents’ Republican Party at the time. In 1964, she chaired the local chapter of the Young Republicans and campaigned for Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.

During her junior year of high school, she was voted class vice president. She was named “most likely to succeed” in her senior year and graduated in the top five percent of her class in 1965. Clinton then enrolled at Wellesley College in Massachusetts to study political science. She received departmental honors and entered Yale Law School in 1969. She completed her law degree in 1973.

In the spring of 1971, Clinton began seeing her now-husband, Bill Clinton, a fellow law student. Bill proposed to her shortly after she graduated from Yale Law School in 1973. Clinton declined at first, but after they bought a house together in Fayetteville, Arkansas two years later, he decided to marry him. On October 11, 1975, the couple married in their living room during a Methodist ceremony. Rodham relocated to Fayetteville, Arkansas, in August 1974, and became one of just two female faculty members at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville’s School of Law. Rodham was a criminal law professor at the university. She was known as a demanding instructor who was strict with her students’ grades. Rodham was named the inaugural director of the school’s new legal assistance clinic. Rodham was the first woman to be promoted to full partner at Rose Law Firm in 1979. She was paid more than her husband from 1978 until they moved into the White House. Chelsea Victoria Clinton, the couple’s only child, was born on February 27, 1980.

Clinton emerged as a powerful and respected partner of her husband throughout his 1992 presidential campaign, and as president, he selected her to head the Task Force on National Health Reform in 1993. When it was revealed in early March 2015 that Clinton had used her personal email address to do official federal business during her time as Secretary of State, she was met with outrage and scorn.
