Lawsuit Against Ray Charles Children

The iconic singer Ray Charles, was recognized for his talent in music. The late singer was a father to twelve children, and the Ray Charles Foundation sued seven of the singer’s children for terminating the transfer of copyrights of Charles’s songs to the foundation.

The foundation indicated that the Sevan children were unhappy with their inheritance and wrongly terminated the transfer of copyrights of the singer’s songs as he had directed before he died.

Charles died in June 2004 due to liver disease, and immediately after his death, a string of lawsuits followed due to rights to proceedings generated by the star’s recordings, photos and images.

Raenee Robinson indicated that her father had called them in 2002 and talked to them about what he planned to leave to them. The singer agreed to leave an irrevocable trust for each of them, amounting to $500,000. The singer was ready to take care of the associated taxes, and the children would have no further interest in their father’s estate.

In regard to the trusts, all children above eighteen at the time entered into a written agreement where they acknowledged and agreed on the irrevocable trust of $ 500,000. The children agreed that the inheritance was the only one they were expecting and no further inheritance would be received from their father.

Reports raised after Charles’s death indicated that the singer intended to leave most of his estate to charitable works for the benefit of the disabled and disadvantaged young people. Thus, the termination of the agreement meant that the children would claim the copyrights of their father’s estate, contrary to what he wanted.
